The hidden risks of DIY insurance in Germany

Why getting Private Health Insurance (PKV) online is probably riskier than you thought

When you buy a €50,000 car, would you buy it based on online pictures and an “unbiased” seller’s description alone?

I doubt it. You’d probably:

  • compare it extensively with other offers,
  • check multiple reviews,
  • study your options,
  • get independent advice,
  • test drive the car,
  • look under the hood,
  • discuss everything with your partner and friends,
  • make a final list of questions and then,
  • maybe,
  • buy.

Yet many expats choose a “3-click” DIY online solution directly from an insurer’s website when it comes to Private Health Insurance (PKV) — a contract that, in the event of a claim (and of course over the years), can end up paying €50,000, €150,000 or even more than €1,000,000, and that also helps safeguard your physical, mental and financial well-being.

And I get it, being new to a country comes with another level of stress, uncertainty and endless admin. So you want to get things off the list. Clean, quick, frictionless sales funnels satisfy that need exactly.

But do they meet the actual financial — and especially medical — need?

I often ask: if you had to explain your health insurance on a single note — could you?

Not the insurer or product name. Not where you bought it.

But in plain language:

  • What’s covered?
  • What’s excluded?
  • What are my obligations?

And even if the feeling of taking out a policy on your own may feel very empowering, to me that clearly amounts to less rather than more empowerment.

Because when the time comes to submit a claim, everyone expects benefits. That is, after all, why you took out the insurance in the first place. But then “how you thought you were insured” meets the exact letter of the terms and conditions. And quite often, the difference between covered! and covered? suddenly becomes very real.

Just as you wouldn’t buy a Smart for regular family trips with your partner and three children, most problems with insurance claims do not arise because of the contract itself, but because expectations and needs were never really matched against the solutions available.

That is why I cannot stress the value of needs-based advice enough — especially when there is also a language barrier involved.

At max for sure, the goal is to put decision-making power back into your hands as an expat — through transparent, independent and highly qualified advice. Because a decision is only truly a decision when it is based on real understanding.

Empowerment isn’t achieved overnight. It’s a guided process. With Max, it typically takes between 3 and 5 online advisory meetings for Private Health Insurance (PKV), all depending on your medical history, individual requirements, questions and individual support needs you may have. Before even starting the process, I offer a free of charge Discovery Call to get to know each other first, get our bearings and discuss how we’ll proceed together and what to expect.
