My Story: Globetrotter & Linguist gone Insurance Expert

Your insurance guide with a passion for languages, travel, and financial independence.

Hailing from Flanders, Belgium, I’ve always been driven by curiosity. From a very young age, I was captivated by languages, dedicating myself to their study until I achieved fluency in five. The fusion of my inquisitive nature and this passion for communication and understanding led me on a multi-year odyssey around the globe, where I immersed myself in diverse cultures, pursued scuba diving and yoga, and gained invaluable life experiences.

about max

Returning from my travels, I chose to settle in Berlin. Having effectively “paused” my career for several years to explore the world, I was very aware of the leverage of smart financial decisions – first and foremost insurance.

As a stroke of (bad) luck, life had already shown me how essential it is to be properly insured: during my world trip, I had to be repatriated for a potentially life-saving treatment. Fortunately, my travel insurance covered everything.

That experience opened my eyes to the fact that insurance isn’t just a nice-to-have – it’s the quiet backup plan that, when worse comes to worst, can make the difference between simply having to deal with the situation at hand (whether it’s a health issue, a liability claim, a legal dispute, or an inability to work) – or facing all of that plus financial, sometimes even existential, worries on top.

This experience sparked a deeper interest in financial planning — and in particular but all too often overlooked yet absolutely foundational role of insurance as the bedrock of any solid financial strategy.

That insight eventually led me to become an independent insurance broker – combining my background in languages, my international experience, and a growing expertise in the German system.

The simple fact that our health is our most valuable asset led me to naturally specialise in Private Health Insurance (PKV). German medical staff and technology are among the best in the world. With one big catch: publicly insured people (about 90% of the population) only scratch the surface of that potential due to legal and economic limitations. The only way to actually benefit from these life-saving possibilities (as I’ve experienced myself)), is by means of a tailored Private Health Insurance (PKV).

Life in Germany brings many new opportunities – but also challenges and hassles, insurance definitely being one of them (even for Germans). Whether it’s health insurance, income protection or simply understanding how the system works, many expats find themselves overwhelmed by complexity, unclear or no advice and language barriers. At the same time, the social system is constantly being weakened by demographic pressures – making good insurance solutions more important than ever.

My mission is to reduce the number of expats who end up blindly entrusting their financial security in Germany to fast, impersonal online platforms – simply because better options weren’t visible or accessible.

Expats are a prime target for online insurance platforms – especially those running aggressive marketing on Instagram and similar channels. These platforms often focus on a small range of products, sold with a few clicks. While they earn the full commission, they usually skip what actually matters: qualified advice, proper risk assessment, help with applications, follow-up support, or any form of long-term client service.

But it’s precisely expats who need professional guidance the most. They’re navigating a system they didn’t grow up in – often in a foreign language – and the consequences of poor insurance choices can be serious and long-lasting.

Especially when it comes to Private Health Insurance (PKV) – one of the most important yet most complex financial decisions you’ll make in Germany – quick online checkouts and generic sales funnels honestly make me angry. We’re talking about our most valuable asset here! Choosing the wrong plan can have long-term consequences. This should definitely not be a three-click decision, or one based on price solely. It requires real guidance, clear explanations, and someone who takes responsibility for getting it right.

Max for sure was created as a direct and better alternative to these one-size-fits-all platforms. While having the same conveniences: digital processes, modern tools, app support and much more, without actually costing anything extra, at max for sure, you can count on independent, specialised advice from someone who understands both the German system and the challenges internationals face when trying to make sense of it.
